Carine Cup 2011
08 February 2011
Premier State League side Sorrento F.C played host again for the 2011 Carine Cup against Hamersley Rovers S.C. The two neighbouring clubs have enjoyed a close relationship over the years and the event was sponsored by Tony Krsticevic MLA, the State Member of Parliament for both clubs local electorate of Carine.
The first game involved Sorrento's 18's side against Hamersley's reserve team. Despite taking an early lead through Paul Harland, Sorrento hit back and took the lead as the Hamersley side began to tire as the youngsters fitness levels shone through. Harland grabbed a consolation goal for the Hammers late on as the game finished 4-2 for Sorrento.
The main game saw Hamersley again take an early lead from an excellent Scott Morris header. Lee James struck back for the home side and the game became a very close contest until late into the second half. Daniel Flanders put Sorrento in front before Lee James added a penalty and Bruno Steptoe sealed the game. There was just enough time for Aaron Parsons to score a fantastic goal from a tight angle in at the near post to restore some respectability to the scoreline for Hamersley, the game ending 4-2 to Sorrento.
Both games were played in the right spirit and teams gave 100% to make it a very worthwhile contest and a useful pre-season match for both clubs. Tony Krsticevic awarded the Carine Cup to Sorrento team captain, Sam Tupman while both teams lined up for photo's.
